Roussel, Theodore C.
1847-1926

Born and educated in France, Theodore Roussel moved to England in 1878 and is considered a British artist. His work was initially influenced by the Old Masters but an introduction to his neighbor, James Whistler, in 1885 had a profound effect on both his artistic style and subject matter.

It was Whistler who encouraged Roussel to begin making prints and he became accomplished in the techniques of etching and drypoint. Like Whistler, Roussel designed his own special frames and, again like Whistler, often trimmed the prints right up to the plate mark leaving a small tab for the signature.
