Ranft, Richard

1862 – 1931
French

A native of Switzerland, Richard Ranft studied art with Gustave Courbet while he was in exile in the Tower of Peilz near Vevey. Ranft began as a copyist, creating engravings “after” such artists as Watteau and Fragonard, but soon became known for his lovely color etchings and aquatints. His entire print œuvre comprised under 150 pieces, of which 85 were color etchings printed by Eugène Delâtre in editions of 25 to 50.
