Valentine Hugo (née Gross) was a French artist and writer. She began her artistic career with the Ballets Russes where she met Jean Cocteau and her future husband, Jean Hugo, great grandson of Victor Hugo. Eventually she was captivated by the spell of the Surrealists and was very active with the Bureau of Surrealist Research under the directorship of the group’s founder André Breton. Primarily known for her drawings, especially portraits, she exhibited with the group and in solo shows.
