Nückel, Otto
1888 – 1955
German
The German artist Otto Nückel trained in Munich and was a member of the München Sezession. He was an innovator of the process of making engravings from lead plates instead of wood or copper and was skilled in the use of a multiple-line tool. He is also well known as an illustrator of wordless novels, a particular sort of book that tells a story using pictures without captions. His genre tends toward the dark or macabre and is widely collected by both bibliophiles and institutions.
